SHANKILL TENNIS CLUB
Ladies newsletter – April 2017
Hi ladies, here’s what’s been happening in our tennis club over the past few months and what to look forward to in the future. Enjoy!
Welcome on board Veronica Casey & Regina Harkin!
I am delighted to announce that Veronica Casey & Regina Harkin have joined me as Ladies Vice Captains for the next year. I will be staying on for my second year as Lady Captain and will do my best to guide both Veronica & Regina through the role to prepare them for taking over from me in April 2018. Please join me in welcoming both ladies on board. I am very excited to be working with 2 very committed members of our club. Here’s to a great year!
DLTC MIXED LEAGUE 2017
This is a mixed league competition. Each team will comprise of six players – 3 ladies and 3 men. The league starts on Friday 30 June for 5 weeks, followed by play-offs. Matches are played on Friday nights at 7:30pm. There is no match on Friday 4 August (bank holiday weekend).
There is a notice and signup sheet on the board in the clubhouse.
Please sign up in your relevant class with or without a partner.
Blue & Gold Tournament Winners!
There was great excitement in the club on Friday 31st March when we hosted the finals of the Blue & Gold tournament. 4 participating local clubs took part in the finals – Shankill, Claremont Railway Union, Carrickmines & Glenageary.
Because there are 4 pairings making up a B&G team, if the finals ends in a 2-2 draw, the rules are that the last match to finish have to stay on court and play a championship tiebreak to determine a winner. And that’s exactly what happened. Hats off to Jill Bolton and Chris Grootveld who kept us sitting on the edge of our seats until the winning shot! Victory belonged to Shankill and it was well deserved after a cracking tournament.
Captained by Heidi Jackson the team collected their trophy from our new chairman, Derek Adams – Heidi Jackson & Edwin O’Dwyer, Eunice Chapman & Chris McEntaggart, Jill Bolton & Chris Grootveld, Karina Polakova & Sean Harkin (subbing for Derek Heffernan).
Massive thanks to Debbie Duncan for the gorgeous catering and as always, my trusty helpers – Mary O’Grady, Janice Roche, Rachel Donovan & Tim Murphy.
Greystones Ladies Shield
The lady captain from Greystones invited 6 of our non-league ladies to join her for their annual Ladies Shield tournament followed by afternoon tea on Sunday 2 April. Participating in the tournament were Claudette Burke, Kate Naunton, Geraldine Woodsmith, Denise Sheridan, Iris Morgan & Rosalie Chooi. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon was had by all.
DLTC Winter League promotion!
I can’t remember when we last had such an exciting league for the ladies. 5 of our 7 teams progressed to the playoff stages of the tournament. Playing in the first quarter final of the day was Johanna King-Halls class 6 team who were narrowly beaten by Terenure. Well done ladies for a fantastic tournament - Dearbhla Ni Lonergain & Paula Moore, Trish O’Neill & Johanna King-Hall (captain), Pauline Larigan & Sinead Ahern.
As luck would have it, our own 2 class 4 teams met each other in the quarter finals at home. It was such a fantastic afternoon watching the ladies battle it out with Ann Maher’s team eventually taking the win. Well done ladies – you earned a promotion for the club to class 3.
Maria Dowling (captain) & Ailbhe Dowling, Janice Roche & Aideen Murphy, Pauline Wiemann & Marian Caulfield
Sarah Murtagh & Sue Cooney (subbing for Katy Stanley), Cathy Grehan & Ann Maher (captain), Eunice Chapman & Louise Johnston.
Best of luck to our Monday non-league Charity team (Claire O’Brien (captain) & Bernie Moriarty, Iris Morgan & Veronica Hayes, Colette Cassidy & Rosalie Chooi) who have made it through to the semi-finals. The match is taking place at home on Monday 8th May at 10am vs Elm Park. All supporters are very welcome to come along and watch.

Ladies newsletter – January 2017
Hi ladies, welcome to the new year and a new issue of our very own ladies’ newsletter. Here’s what’s been happening in our tennis club over the past month and what to look forward to in the future. Enjoy!
The new year has brought much excitement into my life with a surprise engagement and we are expecting a bundle of joy in July 2017.
I am looking for ladies who would be interested in joining a ‘Ladies Captain’ committee. The expectation from the team will be to help organize and execute social functions which fall under the responsibility of the lady’s captain. If you have an interest in giving a helping hand, please drop me an email to ‘firstname.lastname@example.org’. If you would like any additional information on the role, we can discuss in further detail.
Ladies Turkey Run
20 fabulous ladies signed up to play in the Turkey Run over 4 weeks. Great fun was had by all with lots of splashes of red worn by the ladies making the courts look very festive. Finals day ended with a gorgeous lunch – you ladies sure know how to make yummy salads and desserts. Congratulations to our overall winner, Rosalie Chooi. Many thanks to Rita Leonard for helping run the tournament.
No tournament in the club sells out as quickly as the Winter Woolies! 28 names were on the signup sheet faster than Usain Bolt runs the 100m sprint! And those 28 players had great fun for 5 weeks playing the Winter Woolies. Lots of highly (very entertaining) competitive tennis was played resulting in finals night ending with lots of pizza! Big thanks to David O’Connor & Rita Leonard who helped me run the tournament. Congratulations to Tommy Leonard and Dearbhla Ni Lonergain for being joint winners!
DLTC Winter League
Winter league kicks off on Sunday 29 January and runs for 5 weeks of round robins. I’m delighted to confirm that we will be using the indoor centre each week for 1 team to play their matches. Each week a different team will play indoors, making it fair for everyone. The details of each team and the fixtures list is on the notice board. The ladies always appreciate all support – so everyone is very welcome. I will be cheering you on from the balcony! Best of luck everyone and as always, I’m here to help with any queries along the way.
This league will commence on Monday 13 Feb or Tuesday 14 Feb depending on what class you qualify for.
The Charity League was set up to enable ladies to play competitive, friendly tennis and at the same time help charities nominated by the eventual winners and runners up.
Monday League – Players who have played class 6/7 DLTC Summer/Winter League.
Monday Non League – Players who have not played DLTC league.
Tuesday Advanced League – Players who have played no higher than class 4/5 DLTC Summer/ Winter league (or who won Monday league)

Captains Day – Sunday 21 August
The sun shone down on us for Captains Day – and it was a superb day! We had 46 players take part with team Steffi Graf (Kirsten O’Sullivan, Brian Lee, Damian McGuone, Eunice Chapman, Larry Rawson, Karina Polakova, Catherine Sugrue & Theresa McGing) winning with 70 points. Just 1 point separated the winning team from runners up, team Andy Murray. The couple who scored the highest points on the day were Derek & Alison Adams! Well done to everyone who took part!
• Senior League - kicks off on Sunday 3 September and runs for 5 consecutive weeks. The ladies are back playing their matches in the afternoon – most games start at 2pm (there’s an odd game starting at 3:30pm). I am meeting with my committee on Wednesday 24 August to decide on the teams. I have entered 5 teams – class 2, class 4 (3 teams) and class 5. Because of a shortage of players, I’ve had to drop the class 6 team. Team details will be on the board later this week. Thank you to everyone who has agreed to play.
• Floodlight League - ladies’ matches are starting on Tuesday 27 September. It’s a unique league in the DLTC calendar in that you’re not sure on the night if you’ll be playing singles or doubles. There are 4 ladies making up each team. I have entered 3 teams for this league – class 3 and 2 teams for class 5. Juniors who turned 15 this year qualify to play in this league. There is a signup sheet on the notice board, so please add your names if you’d like to join a team.
Coaching – new coaching term will begin in September for beginner’s groups with Arek. Ronan Troy is the coaching co-ordinator for the club, and he will be in touch regarding new term details.
Ladies morning – will resume on Wednesday 31 August. I invite all the ladies to come along on 31st August for some tennis followed by tea / coffee and cakes to celebrate the return of ladies morning. Thanks to Marion Kirby who runs the ladies’ mornings for me. Your help is greatly appreciated.
